Checkin’ Our Allies

Our Allies. They stand by us. They support us. They fight with us. They fight for us.

Allies are important for all of us, and especially for any marginalized community.

It is LGBT Pride Month and as a proud gay man, I celebrate a pride I did not always have. I also celebrate the people who stand with my community. Who support my community. Who fight with my community.

My guest today, Andrew Bossone, has been my ally for 20 years now. He stood with me before I came out of the closet, and he stands with me to this day. In this episode, we explore the friendship between a proud gay man and a supportive straight man. The bridge that was built with our friendship. The understanding that each of us has have found within ourselves, and within each other.

Checkin’ Building Brain Waves

Today’s guest is Nelson Lee, the creator of Building Brain Waves on Youtube.

“Building Brain Waves”  (stylistically and substantially) explores Nelson’s own journey with  Anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, while focusing on sharing the tools that have helped him move forward. Literally taking us on his journey with him, and dropping some hardcore knowledge when it comes to the strengthening power of our now.  Sharing the incredible movement that meditation and mindfulness can provide in our lives, and for our mental health.

Make sure to give Nelson and “Building Brain Waves” a follow on Instagram and Subscribe on Youtube

As usual, keep checking yourself and keep taking care of yourself, because its the best way to help others do the same.

Checkin’ #KeepTalkingMH

Community is such an important thing in this world, and social media does make it easier for us to form those communities. Forming friendships from around the world, understanding people and topics we may not have been open to before. Ultimately, feeling less alone with whatever we are going through or living with.

This episode, I am joined by Mental Health Advocate Power Couple  Rebecca Lombardo and Joe Lombardo. They are the podcast hosts of Voices For Change 2.0 Podcast and the creators of the community building hashtag, #KeepTalkingMH on Twitter.

Two incredible people who ushered me into my advocacy and podcasting.

Make sure to use #KeepTalkingMH on all social media platforms. Finding support and the community we need, and openly continuing the conversation on Mental Health.

Checkin’ Behind The Smile

In aid of the Mental Health Charity MIND  the “Behind The Smile” Art Exhibition  was born from the mind and paintbrushes of Artist Toby Brown. This week’s guest.

Toby, with his own mental health struggles and journey, decided to help open the conversation with his most valuable tool. His most valuable therapy. His art.

It all started with his own self portraits while he was in the depths of psychosis. Soon “Behind the Smile” portraits extended to friends, family, celebrities, and political figures. Breaking the stigma surrounding Mental Health  & Mental Health Conditions by each shedding their own masks. Its quite amazing the effects, when even one person grants us permission to see what is behind their smile. It shows us we are not alone in our struggle, that there is no shame, and that we are all stronger together in that.

Make sure to follow Toby Brown on Instagram. Get your daily dose of his work, his genius, and feel a little less alone with whatever you are struggling with. https://www.instagram.com/tobybrownartist/

Checkin’ Psychology & The Stars

“Growing up, I always had this desire to learn  more about something beyond. Find a pattern that understood the fragments of the world and put it back into a better puzzle of understanding of myself and the reflection of everything that we are” – Kyle Thomas

On its face, we might not necessarily connect Astrology and Psychology. However at its base, there is are connections.

Much of both have a focus on patterns that can form guidance, understanding, and awareness.

Which is why I spoke with Pop Culture Astrologer Kyle Thomas, who also happens to have a degree in Psychology which he utilizes in his growing research of personality, the human condition and the stars. He is the resident astrologer at Love By Luna who published his book 2019 LOVESCOPES- A Year Long Guide To Love Written By The Stars in January 2019

Checkin’ Identity with Guest Dr. J Rodriguez

A “fixed mindset” refers to the mindset that things exist in a static state. It can extend to our beliefs, our personality traits, others beliefs, others personality traits, other peoples identities. We give them words, we can give them labels, we give them boxes that we can perhaps comfortably understand.

Anybody who knows me and The Shek Check, knows that is something I’ve been challenging within myself, so I can challenge it within others. Boxes are no place for people, and fixed and static places hold no place for growth or freedom.

In this episode, what is explored is our identities. While as a society we cling to these fixed identities, again because it feels safe and confined. Easy to understand. However, what is more natural is fluid personality. That battle between the two becomes a new battle for us. We don’t always realize how we fight it in our daily lives, in our relationships with others and our relationship with ourselves.

I came across Award WInning Communications Expert and Professor Dr. J Rodriguez by watching his TEDx Talk at California State University Long Beach. An inspiring jump into fluid identity, mindfulness, and finding purpose in our everyday by using all the people we come into contact within our day.

You can check out Dr. J’s Tedx Talk right here:

“The Power of Solidarity in the Moments of Life” -Youtube

One of my favorite things about this show and my guests, is how much I get to learn. How much my perspective gets to shift, and how I get to embrace fluidity with my views. This episode with Dr. J is no different.

Checkin’ “What We’re Meant For”

There are so many ways to explore to bring awareness, to start conversations, and to bring understanding and compassion to Mental Health.

I think the more and more we explore these things, the more and more we find ways to bring up these conversations the better off we are. The thing is, topics of Mental Health do go beyond the conditions but of course include them.

That being said, art & film is an incredible way to connect with people and kick start these conversations. Its a conversation for all ages. Its a conversation that the 2D Animated Short “What We’re Meant For” is aiming to inspire.

I got to talk with the Producer and Director of ths 2D Animated Short that explores loss, family and mental health. Topics that explore the condition side of Mental Health but also emotional awareness and the relationship it has within us, but also within those around us.

You can learn more about “WHAT WE’RE MEANT FOR” and help be a part of its creation. The Kickstarter campaign is going strong until April 12.

Checkin’ Addiction & Recovery with Guest Sam Morris

“Wherever you go, there you are” – Jon Kabat-Zinn

There are many ways we can find to run away. Run away from a situation, from a relationship, from a setting but essentially from ourselves. We can literally pick ourselves up and move, we can cut people out, we can find comfort in food, find our escape in drugs or alcohol. This is actually a common human trait, and go-to. Some choices may seem healthier than others, and there are choices that become more toxic. Either way though, they do become choices we get lost in.

This is the life that Telos Lifestyle Founder Sam Morris has lived, and its the one he is bringing awareness to. As well as inspiring others to do so as well.

Sam Morris is a Personal Trainer, a Recovering Addict , and Personal Development Coach with a focus on Recovery and Sobriety. To sum someone up in a few words is difficult, but what you get with Sam Morris is someone real, authentic, a man who went from a College Athlete to an Alcoholic to a Personal Development Coach. A survivor who embraced facing himself so he could make the choice to live. Now, he is helping others find their own path with their choice.

“Are you open to change?” – Sam Morris

Checkin’ Perceptions with Guest Lawson Patterson

The word “healing” when it comes to Mental Health, is a bit misleading to me. Especially if you look at it in terms of our physical health. We think of a wound being smoothed over. We think, two pieces being mended back together. I’ve started to look at healing differently now.

I look at my growth and my healing as one thing. If I don’t keep opening up I’m not growing, and if I am not growing I am not healing. The more closed off to anything I am, the more I choose to form walls and boxes around me and my thinking. We might think particular boxes or walls are small and insignificant. They are not. However, we walk our path with opening those spaces and claiming them.

Thats what I talked about in this week’s episode with Spiritualist, Medium and Healer Lawson Patterson.
